and the continuing reaction to the newtown, connecticut, school massacre there. is some surprising news out of michigan on that issue today that we're going to be getting to. there is news about who is going to be in the united states senate in this next congress. we found out yesterday who is being tapped to replace senator jim demint, who is leaving the senate. we also found out yesterday who might replace john kerry if he leaves the senate to be secretary of state. we found out today who is the odds-on favorite to replace long-time hawaii senator daniel inouye, who died yesterday. we've got all that news ahead. >>> but we begin tonight with something that is an important story in its own terms. but for those of us at msnbc and nbc news, it is also an incredibly emotional thing. and i can tell you, it ends with good news. it ends with this news, which i can say personally was greeted by all of us as the best news in the world when we saw it. it's nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel, looking a little disheveled, a little less groomed than usual, but as you can see, looking like

begin with the search for a motive. it is clear friday's shooting in newtown, connecticut can have no rational explanation. the act itself is the definition of insanity. still at this hour, investigators are work to unravel the sequence of events that ended with a man killing his own mother, driving to an elementary school and murdering 26 innocent children and adults before committing suicide. right now it's all still a puzzle. but investigators are working to assemble it. law enforcement source tells the associated press teams are going through the short's computer and checking phone and credit card records in an attempt to figure out what he was doing and what he was thinking in the days and weeks before this attack. >> we did seize significant evidence at the residence. we are analyzing and will analyze. it's a very pain-staking process. >> a spokesman says the shooter took classes at community college when he was 16 years old. apparently did well. an intelligent young man by all accounts. on friday, something went very wrong in his head. police say he murdered his mother while

the attorney general is set to head to newtown, connecticut, today after meeting with vice president joe biden at 1:00. but don't expect to see him. this is not a public event. the attorney general has scheduled to apparently meet with some of the law enforcement officials in that town and then also with some of the first responders who were the first people to enter the sandy hook elementary school and discover the carnage there that ended up being the loss of 20 children and six adults in that school and then, of course, the mother of the killer who was shot in her bed and the killer himself. the attorney general apparently is not traveling with any other senior justice officials to newtown. he will also not be attending any of the funerals or the memorials. and again, you will not be seeing the pictures of him. there's no plan for this to be anything public other than these meetings he's going to have with those law enforcement officials. but, of course, this is a day of more farewells in newtown. six, six funerals in this tiny community, six visitations also. so 12 services. these people b

with connecticut gunman lanza. workers at a newtown hair salon where lanza and his mother were regular customers say they never heard him speak. they say that his mother nancy lanza would give her son directions about what to do and where to go. meanwhile investigators are still not clear about what motivated him to open fire at that elementary school school on friday. cbs news's marlie hall has more live from newtown. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. while the motive behind this tragic school shooting remains unclear, one thing is for sure, emotions are still raw here in newtown, connecticut. five funerals are scheduled for today in this one small town and people are still reeling. hundreds gathered for memorial service to remember sandy hook elementary principal dawn hochsprung. she died trying to stop the shooter after he broke into the school. >> you don't have to know her. you just have to know what she did is an act of selflessness and that touches humanity. >> reporter: hochsprung's funeral is just one of five that will be held today. tuesday saw two more children laid to rest. 6-

. for the third straight day, funeral processions rolled through newtown, connecticut, after friday's massacre. police given no public intendcation of the motive of 20-year-old adam lanza clad in all black broke in sandy hook elementary school and opened fire on students and staff there killing 26 inside. a life-long resident said he may have snapped because his mother was planning to commit him to psychiatric facility. authorities have not confirmed that claim, yet. following the newtown shooting president obama reiterated he will use all of his powers, powers of his office, i should say, to prevent further tragedies saying today it shouldn't so easy for people to get their hands on assault weapons. shannon bream has the story. >> the fact that the problem is complex can no longer be an excuse for doing nothing. >> the president's newly assembled team of the cabinet members and outside organizations have until january to come up with concrete proposals to end another tragedy like the deadly sandy hook elementary school shooting. >> is not some washington commission. this is not something wher

? tonight there is word of a possible motive in the newtown massacre. a man who says he knew the shooter's family tells fox news.com that adam lanza was upset because his mother was planning to commit him to a psychiatric facility. we can't confirm that, but a senior law enforcement official does back it up. saying investigators are looking at whether lanza was angry over plans for his future mental health treatment. police say lanza shot and killed his mother friday morning before driving to that elementary school. there they say he murdered 20 children and six adults and then killed himself. we have team fox coverage. molly line on how kids are going back to school. first to rick leventhal with the latest on the investigation. police searched lanza's home for clues. one thing they reportedly did not find is of great interest. >> right. according to the hartford current, they found no prescription drugs in the home and no record that adam lanza was being treated for as bergers, autism or any mental illness. but investigators are said to be serving search warrants to obtain medical recor
